After an amazing experience in Thailand, we decided to settle in Perth, Australia.
Below are a series of studies of things arounds the home. A animal skull the previous
tenants left behind and Tricia found it in the garden, a pencil sketch of the trees in the back yard (Black Cockatoos recently perched on) and some leftover flowers from my 20th dec birthday.
Theres really no need to venture to far.

Painting in Chiang Rai, Thailand

Living in Chiang Rai for a few months was so inspiring. A place I could have stayed in forever.
From the busy streets of Dar es Salaam and Bangkok to relaxed rhythms in the North Country. We were so fortunate to live on the edge of town where one could venture out through the green tea plantations and beyond or skinny dip in the lake just a few feet away from our door. I would have studied more but decided to work on another Video. These works below are just a glimpse into that wondrous time.

Being in Mambo was one of the most inspiring places to be as an artist. Most of my attention was given to the production of a short video but the rhythm and forms of the people and landscapes are still strong within me. Special recognition goes to Makanyaga, Moddy and Issaak for inspiring me.

ITALY : WEEK 2

Being in Tuscany, there is a great expectation to paint finished pictures. In many ways, i've found it to be more difficult, because the beauty seems unapproachable, unattainable and overwhelming . Its SO amazing!!. However, its only a matter of time until it all begins to flow. Somedays, it seems to make sense, other days are more courageous and we experiment, daring to stand before it all, as others have, and record something of the way we see it.
Below are some quick sketches I completed up in Cortona as a part of the children's workshop. I try not to waste any opportunity so i carry charcoal, watercolors, whatever tools available for study.

This oil painting was executed a bit differently in that i put down a lean layer first. I usually go straight to the value, noting it frankly in its simplicity.

Plein Air Study of Cortona, Italy

ITALY : WEEK 1

Saluti ! the past week or so its been a hike up the hill to the beautiful township

of Cortona, Italy to draw or paint. Thats where I needed to be, or so i thought. One particularly
cold day I decided just to paint from the balcony of our house. Below is the work. Though its not as
minimal as i'd hoped for, it's structure holds together well with simple masses and texture.

Atlantic Raider in the hoist

Here's a plein air study of the Alantic Raider as he awaits an inspection from the Chemist. Lady December's bow to the left standing by.
Apparently, shortly after she was lowered in, a leak was discovered. Though the hoist is not fully visible, the slings are. This beast can pick up 700 ton and walk it all over the yard. I was told she sank her wheel into the ground 4 feet during a boat lift. Apparently the crane commissioned to pull the hoist out was scary. 16"x12" Oil

Here we have the John Turecamo tied up along side the dock. He's getting the engine and other items replaced. This is a fine sight to see as one drives through the gates of the North Florida Shipyards. 12"x12"oil

This morning the sun was blazing straight in creating some challenging conditions. Here we have two 35 ton bronze propellers resting in the grass. Hart bridge over the top.

Elisabeth Turecamo

Plenty of action this day with the John Turecamo leaving the dry dock with Elisabeth Turecamo up on the blocks. The dry dock is quite an interesting peice of engineering in that its a stand alone vessel made of concrete. Built in 38 and servicing the ships damaged in pearl harbor, she was relocated to Jacksonville. To get boats on and off, the ballast tanks below are floated and the dock goes down. The day i sketch this, the Elisabeth Turacamo was carefully position over her blocks with the help of the Wee Lady December, a sweet blue tug and resident of the North Florida Shipyard. The John Turecamo was guided out and is not shown here. Once over the blocks, the pumps kicked in, slowly at first, to insure the boat is precisely on her supports. There's plenty to do on board for the deck hands. Included here are some quick figurative sketches i did during the procedure. The morning sun blazing in, the figures made for some interesting study. however, there was a problem with one of the generators so we had a few deckhands relaxing. The figure on the right is the person positioned centrally on the stern, at the rubrail to help position the tug on the center line. Captain Steve, directing the operation from Lady December.

This was my first glimpse of the North Florida Shipyards. Unfortunately it was from the otherside of the fence. No matter, It just added to the mystery. Here is the Atlantic Raider up on Blocks with the Hart Bridge looming behind. Things just represented forms and values.

I'm excited to tell you about my new project. For the past week I've been painting down in the North Florida Shipyards. It began after a day painting in Memorial park for the North Florida Land Trust's Paint the Region, a friend and I ventured down to the shipyards area in search of some interesting things to paint. We were blown away by the forms. We both agreed to make this a joint project however we each have our own perspective on things.
I'm still working out what it is that attracts me to this area. Maybe its because each vessel has a personality that speaks. It could be that it's a 'working' dock with real people toiling against the powerful forces of nature and the limitations of material. Its a busy place but bathed in the Florida sun, it can seem like its static. Though in overcast weather, the towering silhouettes of boats ghosting alongside the docks waiting for their fit out. There's much to study here. Its really an exercise in 'seeing' Enjoy the work. I'll be there for a while.

A Recent trip back to New Zealand, reminded me of the West coast beauty and power.
This headland is so iconic to me. It has inspired me to work large here to match its strength. this work is 3'-6"x 1-6". i could go larger still.

This piece is the last of a year long series of ink studies done around
my local Jacksonville, Florida early last year. Its Done with a Chinese Calligraphy brush and Indian Ink. It's included here even though it was done a while ago because its consistent with the idea of simplification of mass / texture and therefore value.

Overcast days can often be a challenge to paint under. Limited tonal range and subtle transition in value force the artist to decide what falls where. Summer is approaching so we make the most of these somber days of simple silhouettes. The Study was done along a creek off River Road in San Marco. A regular Friday jaunt for me.

you know i love a good cuppa eh luvy.
the idea behind these quick value studies was to put down
the color without any surface mixing or blending. Very rarely will i use construction 'lines' in a painting. its tough going and sloppy looking but i like the vitality and freshness. One color plane against another: delicious notes of color.

Seagrape at Cayo Costa Study #3

Plein Air 8x10 Oil.
Just returned from a 5 day camping trip
on the island of Cayo Costa, South West Florida where i did several
studies. The study here is of the Sea grape tree which is quite prevalent in these
parts. It's an Interesting tree with a large circular leaf and twisted branches which seemed to have been sculptured by the prevailing sea breeze. Hurricane Charlie came right through here and wiped out much of the natural tree vegetation but these little guys are tough and quite challenging to paint. I tried twice before this one and could have easily continue indefinitely.

Its been so cold here lately and as a result find myself
wimping out for the comforts of the studio. Although
the studio has no heating its cozy with the lights warming
the atmosphere. after scouring the local antiques store on
kings street came home with a truck full of old bottles which have turned out to
be fun for me and the kids to study.
